What Are Chakras? A Simple Guide to Your Body’s Energy Centres

You may have heard the word chakra before, perhaps in yoga, meditation or holistic therapy settings. For some, it feels familiar. For others, it sounds mysterious. In reality, the chakra system is simply an ancient way of understanding human energy, emotion and awareness.

The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means wheel. Traditionally, chakras are described as spinning energy centres within the body. While this is not a medical model, it has been used for thousands of years in Eastern traditions as a way of understanding emotional and energetic balance.

There are seven main chakras that run from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each one is associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. When people speak about feeling out of balance, overwhelmed or disconnected, chakra work is often one way of gently exploring why.

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. It is linked to feelings of safety, security and stability. When balanced, it supports a sense of grounding and trust in life. When out of balance, someone may feel anxious, unsettled or unsupported. Crystals often associated with the Root Chakra include Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz and Black Obsidian, all traditionally used for grounding and protection.

The Sacral Chakra sits just below the navel. It relates to creativity, emotion and flow. This chakra is connected to pleasure, expression and our ability to adapt. When it feels blocked, people may experience emotional numbness or creative frustration. Carnelian and Orange Calcite are commonly used in crystal therapy to support this area.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is found in the upper abdomen. It is associated with confidence, personal power and self-belief. When balanced, it supports motivation and healthy boundaries. When out of balance, it may show up as self-doubt or low confidence. Citrine and Tiger’s Eye are often chosen to encourage clarity and empowerment.

The Heart Chakra sits in the centre of the chest. It represents love, compassion and connection. This includes love for others but also self-compassion. When balanced, it supports forgiveness and emotional openness. When blocked, someone may feel guarded or disconnected. Rose Quartz and Green Aventurine are traditionally used to support emotional healing and gentle heart work.

The Throat Chakra is located at the throat and is connected to communication and self-expression. It influences how comfortably we speak our truth. When balanced, it allows honest and clear communication. When imbalanced, it may manifest as difficulty expressing needs or a fear of speaking up. Aquamarine and Blue Lace Agate are often associated with this chakra.

The Third Eye Chakra sits between the eyebrows. It relates to intuition, insight and inner awareness. This chakra is about perception and clarity of thought. When balanced, it can support trust in your own instincts. When out of balance, someone may feel mentally foggy or disconnected from their intuition. Amethyst is commonly used to support this area during crystal therapy.

The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head. It represents connection, awareness and a sense of meaning. It is linked to our broader perspective on life. When balanced, it may support feelings of peace and trust. Clear Quartz and Selenite are often used in work relating to the Crown Chakra.

It is important to understand that chakras are not physical organs and cannot be measured by medical instruments. They are part of a traditional energetic model. For many people, this framework offers a helpful way to reflect on emotional patterns and personal growth. Whether viewed symbolically or energetically, the chakra system provides a structure for awareness.

During a crystal therapy session, crystals may be placed along the body aligned with these energy centres. The aim is not to force change, but to create a calm, supportive environment where balance can gently return. The combination of intention, relaxation and carefully selected crystals encourages the nervous system to settle. In that space of stillness, clarity often follows.

You do not need to know which chakra may need support before booking a session. Part of the process includes discussing how you have been feeling and selecting crystals tailored to you. Each session is individual because every person’s experience is unique.

Chakras are not about dramatic transformations or instant miracles. They offer a quiet, reflective way of understanding yourself more deeply. In a world that constantly pulls our attention outward, chakra work invites it back inward gently.

When we create space to pause and listen, balance becomes less mysterious and more natural. Crystal therapy simply provides the setting for that pause.
